Pretty certain you have lost the low speed on the fan. the 1.8 has a 2 speed version of the KV6 3 speed fan. Both these set ups are prone to losing low speed through brush wear. On a 1.8 it needs to be a priority to get it fixed.
It could also be a later 2 speed where the resistor has failed. To check to see if you have a later 2 speed look through the front grill at the cooling fan, at the 2 0'clock position you should see a silver resistor on the later fan.

Low speed fan test is :

start car, select demist in the cab. go to front of car fan should be running. If not you need to get it sorted

If you are checking fan operation via obd engine temp them low speed fan on the 1.8 is on at 106 off at 100 (ish) when the engine is running IIRC Simon (sd1too) may have the exact figures to hand

From the forum archive.

1.8 Engine Running:
Between: 98°C and 104°C = Low fan speed
Between 105°C and 112°C = High fan speed
The ECU switches both cooling fan relays off if the temp. sensor registers
a temperature of 98°C or lower.

1.8 Engine Stopped:
Above 112°C = High speed (Heat soak/engine off only)
The cooling fan motor is now able to operate at high speed until the temp.
sensor registers a temperature of below 112°C.

No. Your slow speed has failed. What you have is the classic high speed (emergency) pulsing.

Contact Jules, a member on here, do it via email as he is a busy boy

He will supply an uprated resistor at a good price and pre-drilled to fit
