I'd have thought you're not committed to sell the house as long as a) the prospective buyer hasn't paid a deposit and b) you haven't signed any form of completion document.

I'd ask your estate agent to tell the buyers about your job and apologise profusely. If they're decent folk they'll understand.

The house I was buying a few years back in Weston Super Mare, fell through on the day of completion!(seller simply changed his mind, it was during the BOOM years and I reckon he took it off the Market only to put it back on a few weeks later for more money)
It had cost me Solicitor's fees, Full Survey etc I was not a happy bunny to say the least but my Solicitor had the decency to do my 2nd Conveyance on another purchase, at cost price!! So anything can happen up until the day of Completion, so Tony I think you have a legit case to withdraw your house. Hope everything works out for you.
