Water Loss
Well it appears that I have water getting into the oil,
I have a loss of water level and an increase of oil level and white grunge on the filler cap. Worst case HG,But there is no pressurizing of the cooling system and no mixing of oil and water. I have done a pressure test which does not show up any leaks. so could it be the Oil Cooler ??? The car runs as well as ever starts first time Any chance it could be the Oil Cooler? I have read the post from Robbered but there was never any conclusion to his problem posted which appears to be of a similar problem. By the way it is a diesel with 186k on the clock.

Well, if your car has an oil cooler, it would be a contender, for sure.
Bypassing it would give you an idea.

You don't usually get water in the oil if the oil cooler fails, but rather oil in the water - large globules of it in the expansion tank.
The reason for that is that at the cooler interface the oil is at a higher pressure than the water. Have you checked all the usual suspects for coolant leakage - water pump, thermostat housing and pipe O ring and the radiator top hose connection with the cylinder head? As for the increasing oil level, this can be due to a leaking HP pump front seal. . Last edited by Mike Noc; 4th June 2019 at 08:55.. |

If you can't find any coolant leakage it might be worth carrying out a cold pressure test. Easy enough to knock something up - mine came from bits laying around the garage; [IMG][/IMG] Pump it up to around 12 psi, leave it overnight and check for leaks and a pressure drop in the morning. . water loss
IF the HP pump seal was leaking fuel into the oil/sump would this affect the starting/running of the car?
I have had a good sniff of the oil and it does not seem to smell of diesel fuel I will now drain the oil and see if there is any water in the oil.

The pump can cope with a slight leak with no effects on starting/running.
Will be interesting to see the state of the oil once you have drained it. At engine idle the oil pressure is around 22psi, rising to a maximum of around 60psi, so you would expect any contamination to go from the oil side to the water side in the event of an oil cooler leak. |

Unlikely but there could be a leak in the head gasket between an oil way and a water way.--------When hot the water under pressure could pass into an adjacent oil way.
