Hi.
Make sure you get the head checked if there are no visible signs of gasket failure.
I had a 1.8 Ford with the Enduro engine, it very slowly pressurised the coolant and would loose about a litre per 100 miles. I replaced the gasket which was a horrible job as I had troubles with the head bolts only to have the same fault.
The head actually had an internal crack that wasn't repairable. A good S/H head cured the fault.

I am getting a new/used engine as they could take everything apart to find, as you have said, a cracked head. The garage has a rover 75 with a good engine so a straight swap out and a few hundred quid later and she should be as good as new.

I am sharing my experience of HGF on the M47R as although very rare they can occur and if not shared it does not help others.

Absolutely!
You are doing the right thing considering you have access to another engine.
Will you be stripping the old engine to diagnose what has failed?

I'm handy but this is beyond me so my garage is doing the work for me. They have been working with rovers for years so they know there stuff. I suspect they will strip it and put it in the donor car they are taking my replacement engine from. It would be interesting know what caused this.

Rob have you found the problem with your car yet, and if so what was it?

hi , thanks to all contributing , i havent had chance to collect the car from where i left it last time , still not fixed as i have not really got the time or premises to do it

it is a strange one...

like i say , always the water into the oil...never the other way around... the only thing it could be was the oil cooler ?? is ther a way to bypass it ?? i thought someone may have mentioned it ( only to check ) and it is always sudden when it does happen , never a bit at a time...it could drive around for a day and loose nothing .. next time i start it it will dump the lot in ten minutes...

i will give it one last try for sentimental reasons ( i do love the car, just cant justify £150-200 on an engine, then paying someone to fit it in top, the car is only realistically worth £1500 )then im afraid....ebay

unless anybody can recommend anybody to diagnose or repair

thank you everybody

Already seen :

more likely than a head gasket issue on this engine
