Default Affixing rear number plate

I've had a new rear number plate waiting to go on for ages and had never got around to it. But late Saturday I decided to do the job while I was in the mood. So I pulled my old number plate off, cleared off the old bits of tape as much as possible, and went to put the new one in place. Whereupon I discovered that the tape I needed to fix it on was not in the bag with the plate, and was in fact nowhere to be seen, despite a comprehensive search! As I needed to use the car the following morning, I had to do something, so I used a whole load of Sellotape Sticky Fixers (22 of them in fact).

The number plate seems to be stuck down pretty immovably but I'm anxious it will come off at some point when I'm on the road. Has anyone used Sticky Fixers for this or any similar purpose, and if so, how do they stand up to moisture?

Those wee pads aren't weatherproof, better with proper number plate tape or double sided pads. Get it at any motor factors, Halfords etc.

Thanks, I've ordered some online which are specifically for the job.

Or to be more secure, pop rivets.

Over here in France the only legal way to fix your number plate on is with rivets.

Not only that but you are not allowed to do it yourself. You have to take it to a person registered to fit number plates.--

Incredible but true.---

When I was in the USA with my own Land Rover , locals could not believe it was legal in UK to use adhesive tape rather than mechanical fixings for the number plates.

What matters is not so much the fixings as how well you prepare the area you're going to stick them to. Autoglym tar remover or a bottle of Tardis plus an old credit card and a couple of clean micropore cloths plus about half an hour of your time each end should do the trick.

Oh well, at least you don’t have to worry about fixing front number plates as they now appear to be an option.

Saw 6 vehicles without front plates this morning and two of them whilst sitting 3 vehicles behind a police car.
