alternator regulator quandry
connosieur 2 litre
in the process of trying to replace alternator regulator in situ, have removed to find its a 2 pin ,so probably cant get one for a week, also the brushes look fine ,so just wondering now if im wasting my time and im going to have to get the whole alternator....or do those small electronic components under the gel malfunction?....... history of problem-battery light suddenly came on and stays on,battery is good but the voltage is under 12v whilst engine ticking over according to test no 9 on dash.is there a simple way to test the alternator windings? thanks all |

There are two lots of windings. The stator coils and the armature coil.
If the stators short to earth they will be burnt. ( Main fuse will blow. ) The rotor coil you can check with a multimeter on the two slip rings you can see after you have removed the brush holder. Check for continuity or shorting to earth. Your best bet is to fit the correct part before trying anything else.-- |

I was planning to replace the regulator on my CDTI Tourer, but I found that with limited accessibility, even with first removing the dipstick tube, there was no way I could loosen the rear screw and had to give up and replace the whole alternator.

s'pose next question would be
how hard is an alternator change?? for an fairly inexperienced have-a-go mechanic who doesnt have any other immediate options,or, how much might a cheap mechanic charge if i could get em to use a s/h alternator.Still hoping it might just be the regulator, will test field coil tomorrow, fuse no 14 is fine ,but battery light illuminated and has stays on. |
