e-scooters, what could go wrong?
Not sure if this has been posted here as yet. Legal from Saturday but not privately purchased ones.
Link My own opinion is that this is crazy, 15mph and banned from pavements, no requirement on safety helmets. What could possibly go wrong? Is it me or have we somehow lost the plot? |

Was passed by one of these e-scooters earlier in the week, I was doing about 30 MPH and it passed me at a good 40 MPH.
No safety equipment was being worn - shorts and T shirt, he did not stop at any traffic lights and when the traffic got heavy he shot up onto the pavement still doing well over 30MPH. What could possible go wrong !!! |

My town, Middlesbroughhas been chosen as one of the places to pilot these things.
They can only be rented out I'm told, and not for general sale. All I can say is that judging by the typical standards of cyclists, ( by this I mean the younger people, and those riding around doing wheelies , riding against the traffic, riding on the pavement, and all the other stupid acts they do ), it's a air bet that the renters may expect a very short life for each of their scooters, so short, they probably won't last a week before they disappear, or are totalled. I'm afraid I am a " glass completely empty", on this one. |

I read that as they are self propelled road vehicles they must have third party insurance, hence rented only, privately owned usage being impossible to police, as they don’t carry any registration plates.
Also that the user must have at least a provisional (motorcycle??) licence. At least that means there’s a minimum age requirement. (And it seems if you passed a car test after jan 2013 this doesn’t come with the provisional bike/moped entitlement) So why not go the whole hog and treat them like motorbikes? Helmet, CBT, reg plates etc. Crazy decision, to my mind, as wasn't one reason at least for them to be banned initially one of safety, or the lack thereof? Oh what a can of worms.......

I quite like the idea of an e-scooter wish they were around when I was younger. But I don't understand you are not allowed to ride your own on the road, what's the difference?

Is this vehicle for road inspection? Certainly looks lit up enough underneath...

That's it.
Next Christmas most kids over the age of 10 will have one. Try policing that one! Sent from my POT-LX1 using Tapatalk
