Not the dreaded A3! I suffer that too!

Leave Chelsea, crawl through Putney and out onto the A3 (unless someone has had yet ANOTHER accident) and off just before the M25 to Weybridge, so take me a good hour at least to do 25 miles each way every day. I do try to ease off on the right foot but having had to crawl though the "yummy mummy" brigade in Chelsea tractors when they drop Tarquin & Fiona off to school by blocking the road for a natter... a damn good blast down the A3 to Painshill does tend to help my sanity!!

So many variables when comparing MPG's folks!
You may all have diesel Autos but you will all have different:

Ageing MAF sensors,
Air filter levels of dirtyness!
Tyre makes & tread depth
EGR levels of soot
Weight in boot
Weight of spare wheel etc

And we all drive differently!!!
But interesting thread all the same

Agreed

BUT - it told me what I wanted to know, which was that my fuel consumption is near enough average

I did achieve the golden 50 MPG target recently, my daily commute is 35 miles to work and the same back, I use the M42 and then the M40 up to junction 12 and as soon as I'm on the motorway I engage cruise control.
A couple of things I have noticed:-
1) the best returns I get are with the cruise control set to 70MPH on the speedo (this is probably more like 65MPH as most speedos read at about 5MPH under)
2) electrical activity is kept to a minimum, radio or CD, lights when required, and that's it (I don't use the heater and certainly no aircon except for the occasional monthly 30 minute shakedown to maintain the system)
3) the car hates any speed below an indicated 65MPH on the speedo, even the often quoted 56MPH optimal economical speed.
4) the rev counter is just a fraction over 2000RPM.

I'm under the impression that the turbo kicks in at about 2000RPM and holding the revs at this speed for my journey is making the car run at it's most economical speed, etc.

I've also done the commute at other speeeds - 80MPH, 85MPH, 90MPH, and I have to say that these speeds were also quite reasonable for MPG, I was getting around 37MPG - 40MPG, which for an auto estate is very reasonable!

For the record, brochure figures for the CDT Auto Tourer were:
Urban: 28.3
Extra Urban: 54.7
Combined: 40.9

I guess the answer is, "why not get a manual V6" you wont notice the difference in economy just extra performance

I also average about 32mpg around town 20mins to and from work.

I will agree that mpg is an odd thing. I have said before, my mpg is different Derby - Hull than the return. I always get better mpg on the way back..... maybe Hull is uphill!

I drive a CDT auto which has been remapped and use cruise control when ever I get the chance. I drive mainly back and to work (or did untill being made redundant recently), a journy of 66 miles each way up and down the M56/M60/M67. Speeds vary depending on a) my mood, b) the traffic, regardless of speed though I fing my average is around 48mpg at 70mph. If I drop this to around 65mph and use cruise control i get just over 52mpg based on tank filling brim to brim.

What I do find amusing is when I use the trip computer I can get the mpg reading as high as 63mpg when cruising on the flat at around 65mph, it drops back to 39 to 41 at just over 70mph and way down to 36 at 80mph. On one occasion driving to Bangor and going down the Rhault hill ( I know I have spelt that wrong and all you welsh guys are now going nuts apologies for the spelling) I got an indicated 89mpg on the display!!!.

Forgot to mention I have a brand new MAF sensor fitted due to the old one dying, the car has just hit the 93k miles mark.

Oh

This just gets better as it goes along. The breadth of information appearing is more than I would have hoped for and justifies, in my mind, the asking of such a specific question in the light of the countless other, less specific, fuel consumption threads.

Subjective and unempirical it may be but it is representative of real world experience

Thanks guys.
