Default Diesel with Auto box - any good?

I'm thinking of changing my manual diesel for an auto version. What's the general consensus of the auto box? Are there any known issues with it? What kind of mileage can they cover before needing replacement parts?

Also, everything else being equal, how much less mpg do you get with an auto vs. a manual?

Cheers,
Rich

Hi Rich
I've an auto ZTT, ex MGR Press Office with all the toys.
Its the first automatic car I've ever driven, never mind owned, and it is pure MAGIC.
I had the gearbox oil changed when I got the car with the special MGR stuff (can't remember what its called but I'll dig it out if you want). Apparently needs changed every 60k.

The car has done 130k: it was at 85k when I bought it around 4 years ago. Trouble free so far and no signs of any problems.

It is obviously a bit more thirsty than manual. I get low 30s driving it around this part of rural Scotland, enjoying the driving rather than worrying about MPG.

Go for it!
Cheers
Jim

ive had my connie for about a month now and done a few brim to brim tests in different situations, driving purely to and from work, short 5 mile journeys i get 28mpg,mix in a bit more town driving ie longer journeys i get 32mpg and on long runs i get 43mpg.Around town the auto box cant be beaten for keeping the stress levels down and i also find it a lot easier pulling out of junctions as you dont have to balance a clutch/throttle and steering wheel all at the same time while watching traffic coming at you from all directions

Default Auto diesel

Auto box with the Diesel is a brilliant combination, I never feel the changes and you will have no problems with Flywheel/clutch/problems.
The auto fluid (JF403E)is quite cheap and only needs changing at 60 K or every 4 years. I get just over 50mpg on motorway journeys and around
28mpg on purely local, cold, 1 1/2 mile only journeys. This is a luxury car and is a natural auto. The Diesel engine is bulletproof too.

MPG as above. Gear changes as smooth as described. Point, press accelerator, sit back and relax

Gearbox is excellent.

BUT!!!! a warning... it does increases emissions slightly, unfortunately just enough to put it into the next bracket up for road tax.

Rich I was thinking along the same lines but judging by the fuel consumption figures mentioned think I will give it a miss and stick with my manual CDT - currently averaging 48 to the gallon.
