Leaking thermostat replacement
I've had this car for nearly 5 years, I think the thermostat must have been leaking for at least 10 though. In some of the more recessed areas, the dried coolant was 1.5cm deep.

Interesting photos. Not only has the thermostat failed but the gasket has leaked for some time too, which is one reason I avoid the keyhole method.
It’s not supposed to be necessary but I always add a smear of blue Hylomar to the gasket especially around those water channels. A very good opportunity to clean the gauze filters and unblock the smaller breather pinholes if you haven’t already done them. Good luck |

Smashing, top work!
The KV6 thermostat design is definitely in my 'top 5' for things I wish I could change about these cars...!

The problem though, once I'd identified it from another member's suggestion, is that no-one knew what on earth those channels and clips were for on the straight pipe. MG Rover gave no explanation in the technical description with only an inadequate, unspecific hint in the repair manual. Now that we know, leakage can be prevented. Simon
