The "Old Parking Brake" just meeting efficiency and so on are regulars recorded on the vts on much later cars. So either cars are not properly tested, or these "No Advisory" cars are utter minters.
My tester status is green, and intend to stay that way.
DVSA have systems in place to keep on top of testers, their habits and compliance.
Just to keep folks in the loop !
Can't speak for anyone else John, but I always give our cars a full MOT pre-check myself, using an old checksheet I got from a garage a few years back, before taking them for testing.

Everything that needs doing gets done, including any bushes with slight play or worn rubbber covers. The way I see it they will only get worse and fail with time so might as well sort them out sooner rather than later.

Obviously I can't measure brake efficiency, but I remove the rear drums and clean everything out, check linkages and brake lining thicknesses etc, and then set up the parking brake correctly.

Same with emissions testing - although I can't measure it, apart from a visual check, a well serviced and looked after engine should pass the test with ease.

I might get the odd advisory, (haven't lately!) but I welcome these as they point out anything I might have missed.

I got an advisory on one of mine for 'brake pads wearing thin - 60% worn'

A bit harsh I reckon!

That's one good thing about advisories, you can ignore them.

I must admit that I rarely do anything special for an MoT other than check all the lights work and there is water in the washers and if a diesel get it well up to temperature before the test . I expect, with adequate regular servicing and checking, that my vehicles to be road legal at all times.
