Vauxhall in dieselgate now!
"Vauxhall is the latest manufacturer to face claims that some of its diesel engines were fitted with emissions ‘cheating’ devices or software."

Surprised?? They’ve all been at it. Just depends how well it’s been covered up. Other manufacturers must be better at hiding it...

My MOT tester reckons they are all at it even now. He reckons he can tell the way they rev up.
With engine management systems it is easy to do, why would you be revving the engine in Neutral other than for an MOT test or to show off to your mates? |

Is someone suggesting that a business is setting out to deliberately "cheat" the regulations to make their product seem "better" than it actually is?
Oh, WOW. Shock, horror . I only wonder which way round the discussion went: Dear car maker. Our Engine Management systems are so clever that we can program them to detect a test and alter setting to pass that test.... Or Dear electronics manufacturer. We need a system that can detect an emissions test and alter setting to pass that test.... Our neighbour had a Passat that was recalled for it's emission "remap." It was a lovely drive until VW "corrected" it, then it didn't drive as nicely and used MORE fuel on normal driving. Oddly it doesn't seem to have had much impact on their sales . |

Our local MOT garage was telling me if they get someone to move the steering wheel from side to side during the emission test the "cheat chip" doesn't kick in & every single car he's used this method on fails the emission test.

Apparently not having the foot or handbrake on can also cause a fail on some cars.
Going back to the VW's the reason the performance was less once the software had been fixed was to do with the EGR, the EGR was only used on the MOT and in some cruise situations, now the software has been corrected a lot of VW's need a new EGR every couple of years where as before it was unusual to ever replace them even on cars with high mileages. From what I understand to get a diesel vehicle to pass the latest emissions standards is almost impossible with out some degree of ''cheating'' unless you want the performance that used to be the norm for diesel vehicles. |
