my father in law ( now passed away ) who knew someone who was on the Dambusters raid, had 2 pints of beer bought for him by the Kray twins, met the queen Mother, cooked his breakfast on a shovel when working on the railways, and knew Walter Gotell who played the Russian in the James Bond films, he is sadly missed as he was full of stories - and they were true

Who is the most interesting person you've had a conversation with?
the late steve marriot (small faces) what a wonderful guy had a conversation with him after they had done a show in glasgow and he was a true gent certainly left a big big impression on me. massive lost to the music industry.

Couldn't pick one...
In my previous career as a Nurse I met, among many others, a Lancaster pilot, a WAAF who was in a Control Centre when it was bombed during the Battle of Britain, a matelot off the Destroyer (the name of which escapes me) which was sunk while laden with gold, another matelot sunk twice during WW2, a Jewish Concentration Camp survivor, and a lady who ran away to Paris at 16 to dance at the Folies-Bergere, during WW1. All absolutely fascinating to talk to, I only wish that I had had limitless time to sit and listen to their life stories.

1980 - Princess Diana at the Lancaster Gate Hotel, London, upon her presentation as Prince Charles' fiancée..... (Ok I was with 3 other police officers lurking under the stairs having a quick cigarette). At that point she was a girl way way out of her depth.... Only a few minutes of chat until some Palace official spotted her and took her back to the main room.to mingle with the "big wigs". She was lovely....

He has done alot of stuff , his other views on life and politics are interesting as well.
It is well known in Astronomy circles how accomodating he is (ie if you ring him up 9 times out of 10 SPM answers the phone himself) and he replies to every letter himself on a typewriter .The absolute shame is that he hasnt looked through a scope for around 10 years now due to arthiritis A little known fact is that he supplied the maps of the moon to NASA for the Apollo moon landings. |
