I would have loved an XF or similar, but diesel only in UK, petrol in USA where the diesel had not made its mark. Skip forward to 2018 and the hammer has dropped on JLR etc.

Revenues of £5.6bn are irrelevant if you don't make a profit!

If you live out in the country and don't drive much into cities, this is a great time to buy that 3.0+ litre V6 diesel.

Well of course, but it was just to show the loss isn't that great in the grand scheme of things and not in panic stations yet.

Only if you don't mind changing EGR valves on a regular basis.

Seriously there are some amazing used Diesel bargains out there at the moment as long as you are willing to take a chance on what the government are going to do to Tax these cars off the road. I was at the local car auction recently and anything with a Diesel engine was fetching half of what it was fetching less than 12 months ago.

I should be Ok then with my tweaked Volvo engine.

I don’t agree with your statement that the latest Petrol get as many miles per gallon as their diesels. Check it out for yourself.

I’d say that there’s more to this than just diesels, having owned a relatively recent product for a spell now! The dealers are pretty awful, and it took considerable negotiation for them to admit that the car I’d bought as a 1 owner vehicle with full history was actually a 3 owner car with a 2.5 year gap in its service history!
The quality is poor too, I’ve had endless trouble with mine, and the brand new F-Pace I’ve got on loan has got niggles too! I really want to support British industry, but I’d be reluctant, at this stage to buy another. I think I’d rather have saved up for longer and got a Volvo V90!

However, I’ll see how my XF fares and see if it’s repaired when I get it back, before making a final judgement on where I am with them!

Shame, because their products do drive beautifully, and the 3.0 diesels are excellent, if you can live with the common faults.

Thirsty petrol engines, no hybrid and no electric car means JLR have set themselves up to fail. Add to that the comments about quality and reliability and they really have been winging it.
Sad as they really make some beautiful cars. I would still like a late nineties X300 saloon.

Rather than blaming diesel engines for their woes, I'd say perhaps the world had woken up to their poor reliability ! I work in the breakdown industry and as well as mechanical issues, we have software issues leaving people stranded , even batteries going flat because the door's have been opened a couple of times without the engine running is a common theme with Range Rover's !
