Thanks everyone for sharing your experience. I always try to maintain speed when going uphill or around slight bends so this shouldn't be a factor. and as you say, cruise control makes small efficient adjustments rather than constantly going up and down by a few mph when relying on your right foot.
I guess I'll do a brim to brim test myself someday.

I thought that I get slightly better fuel consumption when using cruise control on long motorway runs but not checked brim to brim.

My V6 does the same sort of thing. If I deselect the cruise, (say to get safe separation from other traffic), when I press resume the car goes hell for leather, until it gets back up to the speed.

Driving manually, I would be much smoother with a gentler acceleration.

Cruise doesn't really work on UK motorways, you have to keep slowing down for the bends innit....

The bends are usually laid out for 70 MPH traffic...

I would not buy a car which did not have cruise fitted or one I could not fit it to due to driving 25-30k per year.
So I use it all the time and can't say I've noticed any difference in fuel consumption when using it.

I achieved my best mpg figure to date 60.3mpg with the cruise control set at 70 on an empty M5 between Gloucester and Exmouth.
