If it turns out you do need a new Master, you'd be best replacing with the metal item - it's proving very reliable in service, and nearly 50% less expensive than the OEM plastic item.

They're available here - 75/ZT Metal Master Cylinder Kit

Dot 3 and Dot 4 are compatible - just not 4.1 etc.

The pedal assembly is a plastic sub assembly and you will notice it is bolted to the bulkhead. In my supercar/racecar building/developing days we really tried to ensure that on assembly of items like this that there was a gasket or some form of material between to prevent the rubbing of painted panels etc. The 75 looks to be exactly that, plastic against paint. So I loosened the four nuts around the brake pedal and this allows the whole assembly to move outwards. I cut a price of very very thin soft plastic sheet, similar to a thick plastic sack and slid this between the lower edge of the plastic pedal assembly and the bodywork and tightened the assembly back up. There is not a single noise now and its just perfect. I hope this is of some help to somebody.
Great! mines the same. Where are the nuts you loosened?

Interesting to note that the Rover 75 was the first volume produced car to have a plastic pedal box.

Here is the sales blurb from Dupont, at the time.

The Rover 75 is the first volume-production saloon car to have an injection-moulded plastic pedal bracket. Made by Dura Automotive Inc., the part is moulded from glass-reinforced Zytel nylon.
Powerful and silent: to serve Rover’s aim of reducing noise in the passenger compartment of the Rover 75 to a minimum, DuPont’s specialized NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) facility in Hemel Hempstead (UK) analysed the vibration-absorption characteristics of the pedal bracket component of Zytel.
The new Rover 75 is in fact considered to be a class-leader in noise suppression.

Mine creaks and cracks, not overly annoying, but was wondering if something was about to break and was unsure what it was.....good to know what it is. Is this just an age / fatigue related thing then of the special plastic? Will it break up at some point, or you reckon it likely has a long life span....? Cheers.

Mine was doing this and it was very annoying.

When you said there was no rubber insert in the reservoir I just assumed it had been thrown away at some point. Now with you saying it has "use DOT 3" written on it (its definitely DOT4 that's needed I'm starting to wonder if your car has the right master cylinder fitted!!

Mine started creaking a couple or so years ago, so I lubricated everything which quieted it down until this summer, when it started again. I had originally lubbed the piston, the push rod eye and the spring pivot.

I've just swapped the master for one of Andy's fancy new ones, which instantly cured it and as I didn't add any lub anywhere, apart from the push rod eye, yet the noise stopped instantly - so my guess is that it is the master which creaks.

I have the old master cylinder on the bench now and as it dries out, it is becoming tighter and tighter to move the push rod and noisier. So my guess is that it is the master cylinder's piston which generates the noises.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

My tazu standard one started creaking about 3 months after I fitted it. They suggested a spray of silicon grease on the pushrods which stopped the creak from the piston where it went through the rubber dust cover but introduced a creak at the return spring and pushrod eye, so then I applied normal engine oil to these areas and now silent.
