Default Best car for a 700 mile commute?

My family and I will soon be moving from Lincolnshire to Devon....., but for 6 months I will have to commute between the two.
As my wife will be using our new car in Devon, I will need a reliable diesel estate .
Automatic with cruise control for the average speed cameras, comfortable and totally reliable.
And to make the hunt harder I only have £1500 to spend.

I would really like a 75 but would this be the best car for the job?

What would you buy to do the job....LPG or Diesel....

The other estates I am considering are: Toyota corolla D4D
Honda accord CDTI
Skoda Octavia TDI
Mechanical condition will be the priority as the Devon hedges take no prisoners....

Hi
I have just ended up with a rover tourer, the other 2 cars I considered were the Honda and the octavia, all good cars, it depends on what's available. The Honda accord diesel tourer didn't have a particulate filter upto and including 2007, likewise the 1.9tdi octavia didn't have normally didn't have one until the engine finished, around 2010. I know the long commute would suit a pf, I would
still buy without if I could. I personally would keep a rover for lighter use.

Where did you read that??

Our Mazda 6 diesel has done 95k and runs perfectly. It has never missed a beat. Apart from servicing and one new alternator it has never seen a spanner.

We went to Italy in it last year did around 1500 miles and it was perfect.

Never had a problem with the DPF maybe it hasnt got one

It is fast and economical to. Great car imho from owning and running one not reading stuff on the net.

Please do not i repeat do not buy a mazda 6 diesel.

My dad had one which i used for work and while it was a lovely ar to drive.

The engine blew itself up at 108,000 miles and looking on the internet camshafts are made out of chocolate.

1st hand experience of this engine failing and it happened so quickly. In the end scrapped it for a hundred pounds

For me it would have to be the same as my other car, a Jaguar S Type 3.0 V6 auto running on lpg.
Then again some weeks I do 700 miles in my ZT.

Are you going to be travelling from Grantham to Devon? 165 Port and Maritime Regt ? Either way it's one hell of a journey.

Rover 75 Diesel or a Volvo diesel would be my choices.
