Default Scrap yards closing

As pointed out to me by Victorgate of this forum scrapyards around Cheltenham/Gloucester are closing down. Any news from other parts of the country?

No value in scrap I should think. Scrap cars attract no money these days.

That's not good for the local enthusiasts.
The two yards that I frequent fairly locally are both thriving, one has been on the go for 40 + years, the other for maybe longer. They benefit from being located miles away from housing or industry in the middle of nowhere, this has been helpful in their survival I guess.
They both think I am mad, and they are correct!

The breakers i am aware of closing is due to high overheads, they been in business for over 40 yrs run by the same family.

Part of the reason some scrapyards are closing is the high standards and particular requirements put on them by the Environment Agency (or Natural Resources in Wales). For instance if you want to operate an "end of life facility" some licences do not allow you to remove parts for re-sale, the cars must be drained of all liquids, airbags deployed and certain chemicals removed and the whole car sent to the crusher!

Unless you get through a certain volume of cars that makes the process unviable, and there is no point in having lots of cars stacked up, drag 'em, in, gut them and crush 'em is the order of the day. That also means that some "classic" cars are being crushed when parts could be re-cycled, but the companies are not allowed to remove and store parts!

As Steve says, the authorities are clamping down so much they are forcing yards out of business, one of our local yards has to remove anything with liquid in and store safely, ok you say, I can understand that, but this includes all the shock absorbers too as they are deemed to be hazardous to the environment.

Can you imagine the time it would take ??

What they really want is for us to go out and buy new cars. You have to realise that the powers that be do not live in the same world as you and I. To them recycling is all about bottles and plastic.

Yes they are certainly closing.

Mitchells in Bishops Cleeve has already gone and is now a caravan and motorhome sales site.
Twigworth Breakers near Gloucester has announced it is to close too.

I took a good look at ths stock in Twigworth and its all been reduced. What really shocked me was the sheer volume of stock they had there. It is a big site and it was bursting with parts.
That may be an indicator of the lack of sales and not being able to cover the overheads.
It seems that no one is buying?
