Default Copaslip a banned substance

I've used Copaslip on the backs of brake pads since H Ford was a lad but I've recently learned this is now frowned upon by MOT. Something to do with being a metallic grease that could affect the wear indicators. So for those as ignorant of this as myself you can get Pagid//Textar Cera-Tec Brake grease (part no. 526770250) from Europarts that will set you back £2.99 a tube.

Is this referring to Copper Grease? If so, never heard of it being frowned upon and I use it regularly for brakes and bolts that are likely to seize.

Oh Man! Just out of curiosity I searched for Copper Grease and MOT and came across this gem on the Honest John forum:

Copper Grease - 93eng
My brakes squeak and I bought some copper grease (Texaco make) in a large 500g pot. Now the pot did not come with any instructions on how to apply the grease.
Is it a case of applying the copper grease to the brake discs? Now something tells me that I should not be applying grease to the friction surface????
Anyone knows where to apply the grease?
Thanks

Brightened my afternoon

It amazes me what some people do to there cars through ignorance. I was asked to look at the brakes on a friends of my wife's car. Her husband had replaced the pads a few weeks before hand and they had been making a terrible noise since. I popped the wheels off to find he had fitted the pads the wrong way round Friction side toward the piston and metal side towards the discs.

The discs were badly damaged so I ordered a new set and new pads.

The husband rung me later to explain the old pads were down to the metal so he had no idea which way round they went.

As far as the Copper Grease I am sure I have seen some makes of pads come with it in a packet in the box.

I have read (on this forum if I recall) that there is a risk of the copper getting in and around the ABS sensor/reluctor ring and causing a false fail issue. I cant not use it, it doesnt feel right not to use it. Although since getting rubber grease with rebuild kits, I have switched to using that on the slider pins to help preserve/maintain the suppleness of the 'rubber' sheaths.

The OP is enquiring about an application where electricity is involved. The copper maybe bridging the worn away wire that indicates brake wear.

Hence making contact and extinguishing the wear warning light.

Makes you wonder what is out there on the same roads as us. No wonder there are accidents for no apparent reason.

Not just out there either.

My Haynes manual for a Fiat 500 I had said---'grease the friction pads on the brake shoes'.--

The friction on these pads is designed to hold the brake shoes against the drums. If they slip then the shoes move towards the centre and AWAY from the brake drums.
The next time you try to stop you have NO brakes.

HAYNES never posted a retraction about this advice. CRIMINAL.
