Default MPG .... Again!

Just got back from a 180 mile round trip, zeroed trip 'n' all the other readouts before I left, 1 hour stretch of 50 mph each way followed by average speeds of 70-75 for 90% of the journey... mostly motorway so pretty much all done in 5th, strong head winds on the way up, tail winds on way back.
Readout when home read ... 60.1 mpg!
I know it's not worth a carrot in the real world but the placebo effect is fine with me .
Going to do a brim to brim of real world motoring soon and then the same for another long haul just to satisfy my curiosity and to compare what the 'actual' figures are and difference is.
I think if it can achieve an average of anywhere between 35 -50 mpg of 'real world' motoring ... I would be very happy with that.

That’s how I look at it. My brim to brim tests showed about 45 mpg in winter and 48 mpg in the summer. That’s over a wide range of driving conditions and I tend not to hang about if you know what I mean

I was happy to achieve over 50 mpg on a couple of occasions when I did long motorway cruises. I don’t do the miles these days and currently my ZTT use is such that I put in about £40 a month as I don’t want to use her on short trips. So we tend to use the 1.4 petrol i30 - and as good as the Hyundai is - we only get just over 40mpg on that.

But it was a valid figure. Your motorway segment in that could be even better.
Remember that the brim-brim calculation will give average consumption for that period and journey type/style. If you later change any part of the equation (basically, if you don't drive the same journeys/style), then the answer will change. However, doing a longer term (say 500-1000 miles) brim-brim calculation for your daily/routine/journey type, it's worth using that hard gained data to calibrate the onboard computer so it displays your 'real world' consumption. That's how the gizmo was intended to be used, rather than showing some idealised, unreal figure. Once you've established a standard datum point, never reset the computer again.

My 2.5 automatic tourer does around 30 MPG on average, although I don't do much driving in town and rarely in rush-hour traffic. I consider that very good for this 18 year-old engine!
