The cheaper universal relay known as a bypass relay, will not operate any systems on your car's dash. Legally you much install some sort of system to prove your indicators are operational.

The much more expensive OEM can-bus unit not only tells you when you have a fault, but on the hi-line dash display tells of any trailer lighting issues.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I can only tell you what happen to mine ,my tow bar and electrics were fitted by MGRover as a bespoke vehicle and if a trailer lamp failed the light would come on in the dash

I think you will find if there is a fault on the trailer lighting it will show both caravan and bulb out lights, it momentarily flashed up on mine the other night.
