Default vis motors

OK first couple of weeks with a V6 and have been reading many many posts on VIS motors. Initially thought it was the comic! Expecting Buster Gonad to appear!

What are the symptoms of VIS motors not working or not working properly; do you hear them??

My last 75s were a dizzl and a normal 1.8 (which was brand new) so never thought about it.

Does this show up on a T4 ? In which case I will need to call Wyn for a check!???

The symptoms are poor performance and poor economy.
I think that the failure of these are a very common on the V6.

I got some VIS motors from Stocktake, to an improved spec. and went for the option of self test buttons.
This takes the hassle of checking them with an external tester (how many of us have one lying around ).

A essential upgrade for a V6 IMHO.

Quite simply, does the car feel like a bag of proverbial to drive, in that it couldn't pull it's way out of a wet paper bag and is lugging about 2 tons behind it?
Is it also poor on juice? as in 20 to the gallon range, when out of town?
Those were my symptoms.

If so, there's every chance either one or both of the VIS's are shot.

No, you can't hear anything and no (I believe, but not sure) a T4 won't show it either.

If you subscribe to the forum, there is the use of a VIS tester to be had, but I'm not sure how quick a route this would be for you.

You need a VIS checker, to confirm things.

The good news is that if one or more are duff, the £50 apiece from Stocktake will seem like a bargain, in the improved performance and economy

A T4 will pick them up and they do show as a code on most generic readers (p1471 & p1472 IIRC) but as said, lack lustre performance and economy are indicative.
Strangely some people report massive differences once they have a working pair, others not so much but later realise MPG has much improved, It depends in which position they fail

I stand corrected

Looks like you might be in for a bit of business mate.
I'm seeing other threads talking about VIS's too.

Seems it's becoming more common

I changed over to an oil sealed VIS motor and was able to improve economy. On a long run this improve dramatically in the old V6, particular on the motorway at 40 mpg. I am happy to verify on my return trip to the UK in August. Stocktake needs your old VIS motor in order to make you a replacement. I am not sure what his latest development is which he does in his freetime as a hobby

Yep, I think I probably had a worst case, in the balance VIS having failed shut, iirc?

A minimum 10 and possibly 20% improvement on juice (still checking) after getting it sorted by your good self
I know after 3 lots of £50 in the tank, I'm around a quarter of a tank better off, put it that way

Just had fitted at a meet yesterday 2 of Stocktake's finest. Mine had failed and were jammed open I believe. This was in fact picked up at the previous meet by T4.
In my case car WAS smooth/relatively fast but no real peaks to the powerband and so thirsty.
Drive back yesterday very busy but now a noticeable couple of peaks to powerband, obviously more noticeable in the lower gears given the weight of our cars, low down urge a little better also. What I did notice coming back was much improved economy at normal speeds, this will be most welcome to most. Have to say having arranged a meet a couple of years ago and borrowed a VIS tester of the 8 KV6s there 5 had non functioning VIS motors and that was in the rareified atmosphere of club cars only.

Once you look at cars outside of the club I am sure its a very dim state of affairs.
Some one on here mentioned last week that a trade seller who delt with a few KV6 cars (but not a specialist by any means) could not understand why some went very well and others flat as a pancake.

Even I as a Norfolk member who till recently had no access to club T4's (thankyou Phil T4) had my car for 2 years and I don't think I ever had 2 fully working VIS motors. Not helped by the fact that having never driven another KV6 "what you don't know you don't miss"

Have to say Dave (Stocktake) is a gentleman to deal with too...

Mark

cheers guys

OK mine is doing 34 mpg av which is pretty good and when spooled up pulls well (not had a six before and been driving diesels for 12 years so am changing up way too early!!)

I will get a T4 anyhow as now its got new fluid and plugs etc it will pick up anything that's awry.

how easy are they to fit as I may get some from Stocktake anyway.
