Groaning headlamps
I've noticed the last few times i have used my headlamps, when first switched on, the self leveling motors grind a bit, more on the o/s lamp. Has anyone had this and what are the chances of striping the lamp and lubing up the gears, or are these noises terminal from previous experience? Xenon HID's fitted.

Mine do this to. When it's very cold my driver's side light also emits a strange click while it goes through its self leveling process

I'd say a 'groan' is likely to be the stepper motor struggling to move the adjuster. It has an arm that pushes/pulls on the reflector. These are connected with a ball jointed link. Maybe worth also oiling the manual adjuster spindle. To do a proper service on the mechanisms, you have to remove the lamp and split the case from the front lens. Pretty easy if you have These photos may help.
