Stat
Any thermostat fitted in the top hose should have the wax cylinder (spring) end facing the engine so that it receives the hot water first.

How to fit Renault 5 thermostat into M47 Diesel
So as not to clutter this thread any more than it is !
Here's how we fitted one with tests results. Totally reversible mod http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...489#post637489

Was just reading that Jules and came to the conclusion that my results with the specalist components thermostat with hole still intact are pretty much identical to your results with the renault stat |

Does anyone know exactly which thermostat we received with the Specialist Components housing. I think I may try and buy another and try it without the hole. I don't fancy bits of chemical metal or some-such knackering my water pump? |

I fitted an 88Deg renault stat today. My OEM stat is not bad, always had good heater temp and would get 82-84 on the OBD temp reading on a steady motorway run.
With the renault stat in place, temp now steadily rises to 93/94 and then drops rapidly to 82/83 as the renault stat opens. It then gradually rises again up to mid 90's. It repeated this cycle 4 times on my test run today with outside temps of -2deg. This was steady 60-70mph driving, no hills and no heavy acceleration. I think the idea of this engine being so efficient that it can never achieve hotter temps is a myth. Happy that the temps are a fair bit higher now but not sure I like the large temp drop as the stat opens. Oh, and that's with a sheet of cardboard in front of the rad that I've been running for the past year. Rich
