Unfortunately most of the on-line comment about the arrest and the circumstances surrounding it comes from the largely anti-police-no-matter-what witnesses to what they irrationally saw as police brutality.
Forensic analysis of the film used as evidence shows officers trying very hard to detain a known very violent criminal 'with previous' and in the process of committing another offence. They were facing an extremely hostile crowd and could rightly be genuinely concerned for their own safety. That place is a scary place to be at any time given prevalent attitudes so, while not condoning every aspect of the restraint, I think the officer decided a 'belt and braces' method was in his own safety. The charge of murder is ridiculous even with the officer's record. Finally, it is after all, America. The land of the free? Well not entirely, not under certain circumstances.
