Help - Can't Refit Petrol Fuel Filter!
When trying to work out why my car wouldn't start, I removed the in-tank fuel filter... but now I can't get it back in!
I'm geussing that you are meant to push the filter down into the tank and then do up the "ring" - but my filter won't go all the way down, and the ring doesn't seem to ever catch on the tank, and it just keeps coming off The car now reeks of petrol and I can't help but think it's not a good idea to leave it like that! |

If you read the HowTo on replacing the filter and seals, you'll probably find clues as to why you aren't having any luck.

I know , fit the seal to the tank neck, and not the pump/filter assembly

As Brian says take the black rubber seal off the filter assembly and fit it into the tank aperture. Then refit the filter assembly to the tank.

When refitting the module, the rubber ring must be seated correctly around the port first. The module has a downward facing lug which must be entered into the corresponding cut away in the plastic neck of the port. It should drop in easily by hand. The steel clamping ring should start easily on the thread using hand pressure alone. If you can't start the ring, then the module/seal is not correctly positioned. If you have to force the joint aggressively, then it will leak for sure. TC |

Can anyone help? I’m about to inspect the fuel filter but am unsure whether it’s necessary? I’ve read that it’s normally related to starting but mine always starts on the button. The juddering is very intermittent sometimes hardly noticeable other times very much so...
Not sure what to do!

All later petrol models (2002-on I believe) should have the fuel filter fixed with the orange clip - or screwed together with a self-tapper if you must. MGR arranged that all cars brought in for service had one fitted free of charge. Unfortunately, few cars were actually fixed before the the company failed, so it became up to owners to do it. Your running issue may be unrelated, but it should be checked. Faulty fuel pressure can produce hesitance to the throttle which gets worse over time. It sometimes develops very quickly until the car won't start at all. If the orange clip isn't there, I recommend you fit one. You'll eliminate the good possibility of being stranded when you least expect it.
