Always a gentleman, never any deviation from the tasteful riposte. RIP.

Oddly, the first time I saw him was on our wedding day on the way to our hotel in Belsize Park in Hampstead before the airport date the next morning. He was crossing the road with his two small children, one held by the hand and the other in his arms.

Huge smile on his face as we slowed to let him cross. Celia shrieking ‘Look, that’s er, wossisname. Aahh, just look at those gorgeous kids’. That was December 1965.
