I smoked from the age of 14 (or thereabouts) to 54. I had the last puff of my pipe (which I'd smoked for over 30 years) at around 10.30am on Saturday February 26th 2005 - just before I had a heart attack and was given a blues & twos ride to hospital. Whilst waiting to go into theatre for a stent to be inserted into one of my arteries, I said to the missus "I suppose I'd better stop smoking now". She went home that evening and threw my collection of pipes and the remains of my tobacco (B&H Ready Rubbed) in the bin - and smoke hasn't passed my lips since. I still have my baccy knife - and there is still the faint whiff of tobacco to it
I can't say how healthy I would have been if I'd continued smoking - but I do know that there was a general improvement in my health after I'd stopped.

My grandfather used to smoke that old tarry rope in his pipe, the stuff that came in a block and you had to cut bits off yourself, he was in his late 80s when he passed away.

Ship's Plug I think Steve - father always used to buy a couple when we were in Whitby. It made a change from his usual Battleaxe Bar - which I once tried - and nearly blew my head off

Not long after I started on the railway I ran out of fags one night, the driver I was on with gave me one of his, Capstan Full Strength. It was OK til I got to the last couple of draws then the "Full Strength" came into the equation!
