Default Cooling fan

I have just replaced my cooling fan on my Rover 75, 2000 reg, 2.0L v6. I have tested the fan works by pressing the air con and the fan kicks in. I have left the car to idle for 10min and warm, fan did not kick in. I then drove it in traffic for 30min, gauge reads normal and hot air come from the blowers, but still no cooling fan. What can be stopping the fan from kicking in?

Thanks in advance

Elliott

How do you know you have reached the required temp for the high speed fan to kick in ? On mine a Turbo it will kick in around 104/5 to bring the temp back down to 92 ish - so a 10 minute idle and a 30 minute drive may not reach a temp that requires the fan. Not sure what trips the fan in the KV 6 ie what temp - but others will come along and advise - once you know the trigger temp you can set the onboard diagnostics - 19-07 setting - this displays your engine running temp and you can see if you have reached the tEMp where the fan triggers on the KV 6.

This is how you set up the onboard diagnostic system to display your engine running temp so you can see if your engine has reached the temp when the fan should kick in.

With the KV6 thermostat opens at 88°C, low speed fan should kick in around 102°C (high speed around 105°C) dropping the temp to 98°C. Normal operating temp is 95-97.

You can, if you wish to, verify that the high speed works OK by detaching the wiring connector on coolant temperature sensor. The engine should be cool/cold. The emergency high speed is activated due to loss of coolant signal. Or you can do the trinary switch trick.

I have just run the diagnostic as described above. After running the engine for 20min the coolant temperature is reading 78c

It's not even opening the thermostat (or it's faulty). It's probably the cold weather and not enough time. Better idea is to go for a brisk five mile run to get it heated through, park up with engine still running and then follow the test. I believe the V6 should first trip at 100°C.

Just had it confirmed its a faulty thermostat. Any how to guides on replacing the thermostat on a petrol v6. How many hours on average does it take to replace?

I’ve done three of them and I guess about 6 to 8 hours, but think Stocktake mentioned the professionals can manage it in three hours! But there again, for me it’s a hobby and I like to clean things as I go, take a break and come back when my fingers are itching again.

Here’s a guide: https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...ad.php?t=73306

Regards
