vehicle recovery
I have my greenflag renewal coming up shortly for breakdown recovery etc. Its a handy insurance to have should you need someone to give roadside assistance. This is something i do not want , and would like a recovery service only. Mainly as i do not want an ill informed " rover specialist " at a garage going any where near my car , as i do my own repairs and work on it, free of labour costs . My wife recently used crouche recovery service as she had a turbo pipe blow on the M1 in her nissan on the northbound carriage way . The cost of returning the vehicle home to leicester was £180 plus. I have read of other recovery services " towing " vehicles, which im not too sure about, should i be on the motorway, with my automatic 75. Are there any independents doing this type of work recovery only ... with reliable national coverage ? My policy on greenflag , as with other policies, does not really want you recovered to your home. if miles away, and would insist upon taking you to the nearest garage !! any ideas of a cheaper option for recovery only anyone ... ?

By the way, £180 for the Nissan recovery is not outrageous especially for Crouch. Had to pay that to get my Stag recovered (only for the second time in my 40 years of ownership) 15 miles due to viscous fan failure. Firm "selected" from the Yellow Pages method with a 2 hour wait. Not bad really. Kev |

Yes not too bad a price i suppose, 4 miles away !! What i am looking for is an independent recovery only service. I suppose that other than a local garage recovery service in the area ,that you break down, i would struggle to get nationwide coverage anyway. I understand that the breakdown recovery people with the big companies would take your car and you home , if out of garage working hours,or would they insist on to a repair garage only ? It seems that they make the decision ? ...

The decision is based on the terms of your policy. In my experience on two occasion over the last 10+ years, I have used the National Recovery feature of my contract to get the car to a destination of my choice without any problems. No breakdown company is going to sell you a national recovery service on its own - it would make no sense for the breakdown insurance to take your car say 250 miles if it can be diagnosed and fixed by their operator by the roadside in 15 minutes. Your only option of an "independent" recovery service that does what you want would be to have a breakdown recovery money box at home and to put each year's premium ampunt in it for when needed.

Spot on mms. It is all in your agreed policy terms. Exactly. Having used greenflag for 12 yrs i have never called them out. My wife however , who has her own greenflag policy separate from mine , did have an issue with the recovery driver when she asked to be relayed back home, with him saying that he should not do this , but he did anyway. Her policy was , as mine is, the full relay options included. There is on ALL policies , the basic requirement to 1.repair at roadside , 2. transport to either to your home adress ,or local garage ,whichever is NEAREST .The other point to mention is the time of day if garages are closed .The final decision is with greenflag, not yourself. My requirements are not for a breakdown assist. I only require a relay service back home. This will not be as suggested ,an insurance breakdown company such as greenflag. Crouch recovery is such an example, although costly. I have found 2 or 3 companies that you just ring up and book recovery for the vehicle , at a cost of loading (£60 ) plus £1.50 per mile. I dont want anyone trying to repair the car either at garage or roadside, as i carry my own tools and the wife will take me home if im stranded.!! There is also a saving of £1200 over the last 12 years that makes it attractive for me ...... Thanks for your replies .

Just to add a little more info. I have received 2 quotes for recovery from companies. EG : 60 miles recovery from milton keynes to my home address in leicester £125.00 and £130.00 all in . Recovery does include motorway and snow/mud recovery at no extra cost. Covers all accident and breakdown or transport or recovery of vehicles in the price. Their numbers are now on my phone if needed. I know that this is not suitable for all members regarding repairs etc, but it suits my needs, and the car will be repaired at my home in my own time. Thanks for replies ...

I've got Green Flag Recovery+ which costs me £96 a year. When I broke down , there was no issue recovering my car a fair distance (about 120 miles) home rather than a garage.
