Default I Have An Old Coin.....

It's dated 1975 and it has "2 New Pence" written on it.

Is it still only worth 2p?

I'm sorry to say yes it is. You might get someone who's a coin collector give you a bit more for it, but you wont get rich from it i'm afraid.

I'm bound to point out that its worth 2 new pence, 2p was, prior to decimilisation, worth much more by the accounts I hear.

Yes, the "tuppence" was de-valued. Quite right.

The copper content back then was quite high, in recent years the value of the metal was higher than the face value of the coins, people were weighing in coins for scrap and getting more than they were worth. The Royal Mint added cheaper metals to the coins and made them worthless as scrap, try a magnet on the old one VS a new one.

Quite right, my error, 2d 'Two Pence/tuppence' (never dinari afaik). However I was only 6 at the time that the currency was devalued. So didn't have much experience of it.

Now, you've missed out Crowns, half-crowns and guineas!

One new penny was worth 2.4 old pennies. It is interesting to see contestants on quiz programmes confronted by pre-decimal coinage and values.

Half Crown was the best coin ever, you had a treasure hoard if you had one of those in your hand, well when I was kid. Oh, that's two shillings and six pence kiddies, but worth thirty pennies then.

Oh I miss the pre 71 days when money was worth something. For working with LSD it was easy 12 pennies to the shilling 20 shillings to the pound. Petrol was 7/-6d a gallon. Oh I do miss the good old days. “ Rose coloured glasses on “
