Default F.A.O Traders.

My MG ZTT 2.5v6 has shredded one of its cam belts so will be scrapped.
If any trader wishes to take the car for free to help other owners keep there car on the road please contact me via pm.
MOT is due very soon so if no takers i will be calling for a scrappy.
Many thanks Chris.

How old were the belts in terms of age and mileage? Just out of interest of course.

The car was on 126,000 and the belts had 2 years left before the 6 year mark. I had been doing less than 5000miles a year. the car was running ok BUT I became very ill last year so had to use a local generic mechanic to do an oil service and the car was never felt right after that. To me they mucked up a simple oil change and soon after there was a funny sound coming from the engine now i know it was the cam belt rubbing lol.

Thanks Chris for your reply to Roverbarmy's question. I can't see how an oil change could have had any effect on your timing belt.

Do you have any evidence that, at the previous belt changes, the tensioner and/or idler pulleys were renewed? If changed, was the tensioner properly adjusted? You'll never know but one of those seems to be the most likely explanation as the belt had covered less than 20,000 miles.

Anyway, I'm very sorry to hear of your misfortune.

Simon

I also got them to change the upper inlet manifold, for a what I thought was a new old stock, that turned out to be for the USA spec kv6 and in the end had put the old one back. But you are right I don't have any direct evidence only the time line of events. Any way off to new pastures new.
Need a new car for my commute to work, as we have a small budget and I am an MG fanatic have gone for the MG3. Simple and basic motoring, a little pop pop car to get me from a to b.

Thanks very much for your helpful reply Charlie/Chris. Your story, concerning a belt breaking after only 4 years service but on a high mileage engine, is the best evidence yet that changing the belts every 6 years is no protection against disaster. The risk lies in the condition of the pulley bearings.

The belts was done by an MG/Rover specialist, plus he has been the only mechanic (ex Rover dealership mechanic who set up there own business when MGRover went bust) that has worked on the car for the past 11 years. I have to go on his word that everything that needed to be changed, was changed on a cam belt change. so the noise I heard was most likely the pully bearing then.
Could the quality of the part as well play a factor, as I have read on here that the quality of parts to keep our cars going is getting worse even from brand names.

The car has now gone to a new home, I hope in her death many Rover 75/ZT can live to drive another day.
