What we had before was purchase tax - still unwelcome but at least it had the reasonable notion that its variable rate was higher the more luxurious the item was and was charged only on its sales price.

VAT in contrast applies to every part of the production process. Invented by a Frenchman Maurice Laurie in 1954.

You can see the attraction - even a product given away for free still generates tax revenue at every step of its production.

VAT could only be attractive to those who despise success and prosperity.

Nuff said.

I find it a bit odd that while those seeing a possible return to lb/oz/feet and inches might be regarded as myopic or antiquated, no one dares to criticise the French for their insistence on the metric system. On the other hand, 100 pennies to the pound is much more sensible than 240.

What would you replace it with, the Independent Value-Add Plus Purchase Tax?

There are two things you can be certain of.

1. VAT is a key part of the tax revenue collection regime and whatever replaces it will need to collect at least the same amount of tax.

2. Taxes will be going up and remain higher for the foreseeable future given the recent unplanned expenditure.

Yes it was - France and Germany were the first countries to impose it. France was first in their Ivory Coast colony in 1954 then across France in 1958.

It taxes everything and hits Corporatist economies hardest. Which means it hits the low paid hardest as those with high incomes pay the same rate as the low paid but as a percentage of disposable income VAT is always a higher percentage for those with low incomes.

It’s a pernicious tax for which there are far better alternatives.

Excellent. Given you understanding of such financial constructs, what are your thoughts on the effects of some people not paying the £10 club subscription but enjoying the benefits?

It’s called freedom of choice.

You either join a club and pay the fees and enjoy the so called benefits

Or you don’t.

Thankfully nobody needs a referendum to choose membership of a small time club.

Thank goodness the majority saw sense and voted for good economic sense a few years ago

My apologies, I thought this thread had turned into one about fairness of taxes, ingredients for success and prosperity of clubs of people e.g. tax payers, club members...

I forgot - freedom of choice concepts kick in when we do not wish to contribute our fair share.

Right time to move on from this topic, me thinks....

Depends upon an individuals concept of fair.

If what you are forced to pay for something is excessive or the item not wanted or of any value to you, the the cost cannot be fair.

Hence one person notion or interpretation of fairness is often not the same as others.

If you give it some thought I am sure you will appreciate my point.
