After having 3 rover 75s and a zt180 all at the one time, i sold off all the 75s and still kept the zt.
I used to drive 300km to our holiday house regularly in the various 75s and never once did they ever give me an issue on the road.
The Zt is now in the garage at the holiday house so and when there i love to fire it up and take it for a spin
I now drive a recent model jeep grand cherokee diesel turbo and must say it drives really well, goes like a rocket and is way more comfortable for long trips
but as said the newer cars just miss somthing in the ambience dept.
As mentioned, everything in the newer cars is coded, needs dealer gear to sort out anything electrical and the parts prices are crazy (jeep price for a headlight is about $2,500 aud) but as mentioned you eventually need somthing reliable that you can jump into and go without worrying if its age.
As for new car issues- see all manufacturers are having issues, Toyota with blown pistons in some models, kia, jeep with bearings, Bmw etc electrical issues.
These days its a bit of a lottery.

She might want to do a little more research as the RCZ is a Peugeot . Good choice though. Those Prince engines can be problemativ so a diesel might be the better option unless she does short journeys.

The bearing-in-disc arrangement is a bit of a Frenchism. The Megane that my 75 replaced had the exact same arrangement. One of the bearings started to groan which meant replacement 2x new discs and a set of pads. I was not impressed as there was nothing wrong with the pads or discs themselves. That said, replacement was fairly straightforward and the lack of corrosion impressive.

Sorry - the Citroen was my typing whilst thinking about something else. I am very familiar with the RCZ as a colleague had one.

My daughter's daily driving is mostly short journeys of 5ish miles each way so no diesel.

It’s always got to be a personal thing, of course, but I’ve had the Rover over 11 years now, and it would simply feel weird driving something else* – it’s MY CAR, in the same way that these Loake Burfords I’ve owned for 10 years are My Boots

I’ve spent nearly a Grand a year over the last four, but that included replacing most of the brakes and suspension, complete new exhaust, 2 new clutches etc. And it also includes tyres and servicing. I can’t see any significant rust anywhere (except the rear upper arms, which were clean rotten, and were replaced within that period).

200,000-odd miles done now, about 140,000 of which were by me. I keep saying when it packs in I’ll get a Leaf and a home charger, but what do I mean by “packing in”… it’s already packed in more than once (eg slave cylinder), and we’re still here!

*apart from the TF, of course. It’s only cost me about £800 (inc 4 tyres and servicing) over 3 years, and is lots of fun. Oh, and my girlfriend’s Aygo, which is a wee bit gutless going up hills, but otherwise is an absolute hoot, sticks to the road like an old Mini, doesn't use any petrol, and you can park it in very small spaces.

I believe similar conversations and debates were had by devout Lanchester LD10 owners when the Ford Cortina was launched.

With hindsight, however, progress was undeniable.

Have to agree with that. It made me wonder how many traction engines Jeremy Clarkson’s Farm Lamborghini tractor could do the work of?

The difference was probably just some retraining and the special tools were probably metric spanners and a timing light.

These days the new tools are a device that is probably a couple of grand or more and needs updating every few months. If you get it wrong when you are repairing one of these modern cars the parts can cost as much as the vehicle is worth.

A friend of my wife had too write off her car as the ECU was faulty, no used ones available, a new one was £1800 plus several hundred for it to be fitted and coded to the car and its components.

How many cars end up being scrapped because of a faulty diode, resistor or some broken solder? What a total waist and we are supposed to be getting greener.

On a recent trip to Scotland he kept getting a warning that the steering assistants was going to be turned off and it did on a couple of occasions, it would come back if he switched off the car and restarted it.

Any way it went into the dealer today for investigation. He was charged £280 to investigate the problem and all it needed was a software update

You cant tell me they didnt know exactly what the problem was likely to be and he was warned it might need another update if the problem comes back.

Anyway while on the ramp it was noticed it needs a new header tank for the cooling system but they didnt have one in stock, the part is £180, the sensors need coding to the car and it will take about an hour to fit, total cost will be over £350.

This is on a 42 month old car with 22k miles on it.

Tell Him to write to Ford demanding a Refund and compensation for his spoilt trip, the software update should have been carried out at its last service. As to the header tank the sale of goods act apples the one on the car was not fit for purpose. I am sure Ford do not want the publicity that the header tanks are designed to last less than 42 months. Money in the bank. With the age and mileage he can’t loose. If the dealer was worth their salt they would have contacted Ford direct on his behalf.
The fact that the fault meant the vehicle was dangerous to drive when it had passed its First MOT six months before. The dealer knew of the fault and admits that there is an ongoing problem. I would be asking when the recall on these Land Rovers is happening.
Though when a problem of some cars selecting R all on their own resulting to damage to property and death on a American model the company chose to pay out on a claim by claim basis as this was cheaper than doing a recall. The recall only happened when the Federal supreme court instructed the company to recall the vehicles that could be faulty. Please note this was not Ford.

Honest officer I had selected park and applied the emergency brake. I don’t know how the SUV reversed into these school children and then stopped when it hit the school bus.
Yes sir if you would get in the back of the cruiser please.
