I dont know how to take any covers off or even where to look but the belt visible from behind the dip-stick definitely rotates when trying to start up. It also rotates when the car is in gear and I rock the car back and forth.

Hello Simon,

As Stocktake has said, what you have observed is the ancillary drive belt which drives the alternator, power steering and air conditioning compressor.

Removing the left-hand bank rear timing belt cover is probably the easiest way to determine whether the front belt has broken by looking for rotation when you turn the starter. But as you've said that you're not DIY-minded, seek assistance from member Jules at Colwyn Bay.

Or, more to the point, the belt can be destroyed by a failed or incorrectly adjusted tensioner pulley or idler pulley.

Yes that and a cam sensor fault logged - could be the cams aren't turning over whilst the engine is. Hopefully not the case but it's the first thing I'd check.
