MOT extended for 6 months. Conditions?
Now we all know it is better to have our MOT carried out at the correct time, it would appear that there is some confusion as to the conditions
A member has been informed as thus: "The garage informed me that all those people with the 'free' extra 6 months MOT only get a further 6 months when they pass their test. Can't have garages missing out because of Coronavirus..." doesn't seem right to me Anyone in the trade confirm or deny?

If this is the case I hope the 6 monthly one is half price.

That is not what the government website says:-
"Your car, van or motorcycle’s MOT expiry date will be extended by 6 months if it’s due on or after 30 March 2020 - but you must keep your vehicle safe to drive." The safe to drive comment is no different to when you drive a car with a non extended MOT date. |

oh, I answered on another thread but I questioned this with my garage, and their interpretation was that if the MOT has been extended by 6 months then when you MOT it is then valid for 12 months from that date (and not when it was originally due) as a normal MOT would be.

If one was to miss out genuinely on obtaining a new Test Certificate, any test would then cover twelve months, regardless of the time since the last test; this situation is similar and any test would be to cover the next, i.e. following, twelve months.

I would have thought legislation would need to change if there were to be any restrictions on the validity of any pass?

Your MOT is due 1st June 2020, it automatically extends to 1 December 2020.
If you MOT your car on 2nd June 2020, MOT expires 1st June 2021, if you MOT the car on 1st November 2020, it expires 1st of December 2021. Basically if your car MOT is due, you can take advantage of a six month extension to the existing MOT, or simply have the car tested as per normal. The only time I could see anyone actually requiring an MOT extended, is if they were at home shielding from Covid, in which case they wouldn't be using the car in any event. Anyone who needs to use their car, should irrespective of DVSA extension, have their car MOT carried out at the normal time, the extension is another example of an unnecessary piece of bureaucracy that causes confusion.
