Default Any Electricians on here?

need some advice with wiring this well water pump up to a UK mains supply.

Somebody told me Live to U1 and Negative to W1 ?

Pump is trying to move in the correct direction upon first switching on the power, but otherwise no movement and just humming from the motor.

Its a mono pump CMS241/H13F

You need to be researching 'capacitor start, single phase motors', of which I have zero experience, but this might help....

Phone the manufacturer +44 (0)161 339 9000 (24 hrs) or email [email protected]

Warning - don't let it just buzz for more than a second, you will burn it out.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

You were told correctly - Live to U1, Neutral to W1.

Make sure the two links are in place - U2 to V1, and V2 to W1.
Make sure the capacitor is present, and connected W2 and U2.

If you can access the impeller, try turning it by hand without the power on - the seals can get a bit tight in storage.

The pump is likely to be a 'permanent split capacitor' arrangement, so it's like the drawing that Harry's given you, but without the switch.

Same symptoms with central heating pumps, faulty capacitor will cause the pump to buzz but not turn. You can try tapping the pump to see if it will start, but replacing the capacitor is the only long term fix, unless the bearings have seized.

I don't think that will be possible - the pump uses a clever arrangement of a helix / like a corkscrew shaft, which runs in a soft, but tough rubber like shaped outer sleeve.

The chemical industry vernacular is a 'pig's tail' pump.
I believe the diesel UBP is the same principle.

Is there a way to test the capacitor?

My feeling was also that maybe the capacitor is faulty. But.. Its a brand new £500 pump as our old one started leaking and was noisy and stopped being able to draw the water properly from the well.

Could the Cap just be bad from the factory?

We have a multi meter somewhere, if you can tell me what it needs setting to, to test it.

thanks for everybody's help btw

You can test it bit you need a bit of kit to do it. If it's not turning contact the supplier.

here is a link

YES! I've just been through the pain of buying & returning 5 capacitors for a pressure washer because they were 'bad' (less than 20uF measured, nowhere near the 35uF stated). In the end I gave up and ordered a 40uF, which was 'good' and works fine.
