Default creaky suspension?

my dad's 75 seems to be cursed with creaky suspension. In recent years the suspension became pretty creaky when crawling in traffic or when starting and stopping (it's an auto). Towards the end of last year we had the springs, shocks and top mounts replaced all round which cured the issue. Suspension was silent for a good few months but has since become creaky again. From memory I think drop links were done as well. Wishbone bushes have been changed more than once over the years.

any ideas what may be causing this?

Try some silicone spray on the rubber mounts to wishbone and antiroll bar rubbers.

When I had the SD1 my suspension used to creak. I found out that it always happened when we had a long hot spell, yes no different to what we have had at times this year. I found out where it was coming from:- shocker bushes, and sprayed some light oil around where they were rubbing against the actual case of the shock and the top mounting. All noise gone. The heat dries everything out.As soon as we had rain , it stopped squeaking.

a quick update on this, the car has now developed a almost knocking sound when steering, even does it when moving the steering left to right when stationary. Rang my local MG Rover specialist and he recons it's the top mounts, which may be what's causing the creaking too. Will report back what we find, as the mounts had only been replaced 11 months ago.

I had an annoying creaking when I first bought my 75 in conditions that you describe - mostly the action of stopping and starting.

Turned out the front subframe was never tightened up properly so there was some slight movement.

Nipped it up tight and never had the problem again.

Worth a look maybe.

Default UPDATE: solved

Hi all,

this has been sorted yesterday. it was the top mounts.

the problem continued to get much worse, constant creaking and knocking even when steering from lock to lock whilst stationary and when driving it was now knocking and bonking similarly to when drop links or wishbone bushes fail.

new top mounts and bearings now fitted and the suspension is silent and super smooth.

Hopefully these mounts and bearings last a lot longer, as the last ones were only fitted 11 months ago, and started creaking around 6-9 months after fitting them.

Pleased this is fixed, but it would be interesting for us others to know where you got the 11 month mounts from so the rest of us can avoid them.

Regards

PS Just sent you a PM regarding my IPK

Just curious but were the fail safe washers in the correct orientation?

They were from DMGRs. First time I've ever had a part fail so soon from them for about 5 years, and I've bought a lot of stuff from them over the years. Hopefully it was just a faulty pair I was sent last time and these ones last. DMGRS sent me a replacement pair as was well within the 3 year warranty.

If you mean the curved large black washers at the top of the struts yes they were the right way up. The previous set of top mounts and current ones were fitted by Kevin at MG Rover repair wickford who you know.

I've got exactly the same issue and I have also Changed Struts, top bearings , rear wishbone bushes and droplinks but the creaking still persists , so I will be trying a drop of Silicone spray too!
