I bought my wife a little Hyundai Getz when she started driving...had it for three years without any issues before replacing it with a semi automatic Suzuki Celerio a year ago when our daughter started driving (had to be auto as wife and daughter just can't get how to drive manual).
Both great trouble free little "beginner" cars and so cheap to run.

DONE: HAD A CRAZY IDEA THAT I HAD TO GET RID OF MY MG ZTT DUE TO NOT HAVING A DRIVE AND HAVING TO PARK ON A BUSY STREET WITH A VIEW TO GETTING ANOTHER ONE AT A LATER DATE WHEN I HAVE A DRIVE. ENDED UP REALISING IT REALLY ISN'T PRACTICAL NOT HAVING A CAR TO GET AROUND AND I NOW OWN A VW EOS 3.2 V6 INDIVIDUAL (1 OF 20 REMAINING IN THE UK WITH THAT ENGINE AND TRIM COMBO) EVEN THOUGH I STILL LIVE ON A BUSY ROAD WITHOUT A DRIVE |

I'm going through the same thing for my son at the moment, the largest car with the smallest insurance group (2) that can be got for not a lot of cash I can find is the Skoda Fabia 1.2 classic 54bhp, he obviously wants a new corsa which can be got on a PCP lease for not a shocking amount.

Mg zr 1.4's are surprisingly low on insurance. The micra is probably the best of the bunch. The corsa I'd a god awful car if it's an older one ane the engines aren't that reliable.

After passing his test my son decided the car for him was a citroen C2. Ended up with the 1.1 Desire model, reasonably cheap on insurance with his mum and myself as named drivers. Ideal first car as not too much power to allow him go mad, but looks fairly stylish at the same time!

Well apart from our location and the lack of car numbers and choice , and that being Female ,changes her mind every 10 seconds ,its going quite well
At least she hasn't got the pressure of needing a car for work on Tuesday next!.. C.

Welcome to the Family MG club ...
Hmm got that wrong then ...
But after all the hassle mentioned before .. Found a car on Gumtree about 300 yds away ... Answered 20mins after the add appeared , gave it a good looking at this evening . And it now parked outside .... Our first Ford since the mk3 fiesta years ago.. But for 850 quids .. and 06 Cmax 1.6 72k miles... like this ... not too shabby for the money .. Now I gotta learn Ford ..
