Noisy Tyres!

My recently acquired 75 diesel has budget tyres on - 2 are Maxxis and 2 are Prime Well. They are around half worn and give a very noisy ride.

The noise becomes noticeable from around 40 mph and gets louder as I go faster until it peaks at around 65 mph. It then decreases a bit at 70 and above.

I have tried swapping them from the back to the front and vice-versa and I think it is now a little bit less but not much. I cannot pin point whether it is the front pair or the rear ones or both.

Does anyone have a similar experience and are there any recommendations for moderately priced tyres that are quiet on the road?

I have been very pleased with the Barum Bravuris 2's. Much quieter ride. I found them cheapest via my AA membership with discount fitted by National Tyres.

Perfect match for the 75.

Low priced tyres typically make more road noise. Basically you get what you pay for. The 75 was originally fitted with 'quiet' tyres. But they are expensive.

I'm sure you'll get more advice than you can cope with on what you should fit. I'm saying nowt on it.

Tyres, you get what you pay for..

You mention you have moved the tyres round and little difference in noise is noticed. Don't rule out a wheel bearing on it's way out.

I appreciate that cheap tyres tend to be noisier but have had them on other cars without having this problem. It is bad enough to spoil the driving experience.

Barum Bravus tyres have been recommended on other forums so they may be one to consider.

I have checked the wheel bearings and none have play and rotate freely so I don't think it is that but will wait and see.

All new tyres should be sold with a noise rating, which should assist,
you might even be able to see how your existing tyres rate if they are still current

Agreed, also, ensure the tyre pressures are correct, and get the alignment of the wheels checked and corrected accordingly. A tyre running even slightly on it's side wall will be noticeably louder than one running correctly on it's central contact patch.

The tyres I have at the moment are 205 65 15 fitted on Crown alloys.

My previous 75 1.8 had 16 in Union alloys fitted with Sunny tyres that "hummed" at 30/40 mph on some surfaces but were quiet after that.

I will check out Camskills when I replace them - it just seems so much easier to use someone like Blackcircles who are generally competitive and you can pick the depot where you want to have them fitted.

It seems that whether tyres are noisy or not is a bit of a lottery when choosing cheaper brands.
