Thanks for all the suggestions guys (i assume..). The red lead going to the compressor is dead when the engine is running and demist is on. When i short the rb and br wires in the trinary switch the clutch does then engage. When i take a resistance reading on the trinary between these two connectors i do not get zero. I get nothing, just a constant reading of 1, which i presume indicates there is no connection whatsoever between these two terminals. Does all this give any further clues to what may be happening..? Ta, Phil.

Yes Phil, thanks to your very clear test results.

As Ron predicted, there is insufficient refrigerant in the system so the trinary switch has disabled compressor engagement to prevent damage.

As you said there appear to be no mobile independent specialists in or near Settle so you'll need to enquire at Peugeot main dealer F.H. Ellis or the JLR Ribblesdale Service Centre, both of whom ought to be able to re-gas your system.

If you have any trouble, come back to us please.

Thank you all so much for the good advice, i've got much further along than i thought would be possible, and i now kind of understand the system. This site really is top quality and is keeping so many cracking Rovers on the road!

I thought i'd follow your instructions just to reassure myself that there was a healthy circuit there. However, the colour of my wires do not correspond to the colours you described then. You refer to a grey wire with a yellow stripe on terminal 1. On my terminal 1 i have a red wire with black stripe, opposite it on terminal 4 it is black with red stripe. Terminal 3 has a yellow with grey stripe and opposite that on terminal 2 is a plain black wire. When i bridge 1 and 4 (rb to br), i then get power to the condensor. Am i correct in assuming that when the system is at proper operating pressure, the function of the trinary switch is to bridge these two terminals? These are the terminals you got me take a resistance reading on, so i think this should make sense? I know this sounds a bit pedantic, but i panicked when i saw i had different coloured wires to your old post and i just want to make sure i have everything as it should..! Ta, Phil.
Presumably you've read this? https://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/for...ad.php?t=35567

Just seen it and it seems to confirm that the testing i have done is correct for testing the clutch. I just went into panic mode a little too quick as my wiring was different colours to the 2015 post. I'll take another valium and sort out a regas...

Who ever re-gasses it should do both a vacuum and pressure test to make sure there are no leaks.

I went through the exact same issues as you, and after my local guy pressure tested with dye, found this

The different wiring colours are due to one car having a petrol engine and the other being a diesel.

What you'll get from the two main dealers in Settle is an evacuation, vacuum test (which is not totally reliable for finding leaks) and re-charge performed automatically by machine. They won't have the equipment or expertise for the pressure test which macafee2 mentioned.

Just a reminder that air conditioning needs to be run periodically, for example once a month, all the year round if loss of refrigerant is to be avoided. Rainy days are a good opportunity when its dehumidifying effect will keep your windows clear.

TBH, I wouldn’t trust them to put air in my tyres.
