Strange that a lot people responding to this thread are from the North East, I'm originally from Guisborough/Great Ayton
I was born in Canny Yatton, went to school in Guisborough, have lived in Guisborough for nigh on 50 years - but still go back to Ayton to drink.

Very useful them thar 'ills - they mask the sound and light displays when one or other of the plants at Wilton is flaring off

Same here, moved to Guisborough in 1970 when I was 4. Then moved to Norfolk in 1997.
My mum is still in Guisborough and I have an Aunty and uncle in Ayton if I'm up there I normally go for a drink with them in the oak

Hi Rod,

All hire boats have to use the pilot service, Private boats don't but can pay should they rather the pilot take them through.

It's worth pointing out that the Martham boat stuck under the bridge was being piloted by the staff of the hire company and NOT hirers.

The boat had been stuck in Herbert Woods Boatyard for a few days due to the high river levels.

Marthams took the decision to take her under and back to their own yard.
Obviously it didn't quite work out as planned but I'm sure they will have it back in fleet hire very soon.
