Also, when you reach 70, you have to renew the licence using a 70+ licence application form.

I believe I'm right in that all licences issued after you reach 70 are only valid for 3 years.

Regards

Mike

Yes, you are correct, but if you renew on line its a free service and the new licence appears in about 5 working days.

Hi Steve.
I presume that is if you are 70 only below that age there is a cost I think of £14, also how does it work on line if you have to add a photo? of yourself, anyone applied recently who knows all the ins & outs of applying on line.

Just renewed mine online after change of address. IF you have a passport they can access that photo apparently and use that. They do require lots of other information though as well, NI number, passport number. I found it fairly straightforward and new one acme within a week

Hi Mike. Same here. I used to drive articulated lorries and any big stuff on my car licence. When the ‘grandfather’ system came in, my gaffer who was a solicitor and used to prosecute for Birmingham Council amongst other things, put me down to carry on driving artic’s, and when I told him I did not want artic’s on the new licence, he could not believe it. When I explained that over the last three months I had lost two friends in articulated lorry accidents, he reluctantly said that it was ok. Morbid, I know, but always thought I would end up crushed in a cab. Seen a few of those also.

Just renewed my Driving Licence for the second time as I am 73 at end of the month. This time DVLA required a photograph and didn't use my Passport although that is still valid. I did have the medical to keep my C1, D1 entitlement.

Derek, just to get it clear you had to provide a new photograph, they would not use the existing passport photo? Thanks. Chris.S.

You should be able to do the whole lot online as my wife recently got a new passport this way. It's cheaper too, and you can either upload a photo of your own, or get one taken by a professional, who gives you a reference number to link to.

I assume you could then do the usual driving license update using your passport photo

Just applied online for my second 70+ licence, not yet received it though. I chose to lose C1 and D1 last time, so it was a simple process.

But - I hope they don’t miss off the motorcycle entitlement, not that I intend riding again, it’s just that I don’t know which group - car or bike - lets me drive my bike-engined three wheeler!!
