Default Thumb print phone I.D. - affected by hand washing?

My iPhone scans my thumb fingerprint.

Over the last few days I have noticed an increasing level of failure. I think this is due to the regular hand washing I am doing as whilst my skin is a bit chapped on the back of my hands, the skin on my finger and thumb tips seems far smoother and softer.

After drying out all is fine - then wash hands and I get “Try again” message

Can you turn the feature off for the foreseeable future? Not that any of us will be out and about much so shouldn't be a security issue? They obviously like slightly grubby hands!

This is a subject that I have had little experience with so far, apart from the entry system at work, we drive into the staff car park, lock and leave the vehicle and walk over to the turn-style thing. We are then to use either facial recognition, or finger-print recognition.
As this system was installed, many of us had reservations on the hardiness and reliability of such system. And sure enough - after 3 weeks service it has shown its true capabilities. It was to save on staffing at the security gates leaving them to deal with vehicle deliveries ETC.
What we experience now is "Authentication Failed" for both finger and facial recognition, thus many thousands spent and countless hours and activity registering everybody has fallen to the old fashioned way, so the gate-keeper now has to manually authorise everybody's movements both in and out every day.
Progress ?
Only if it works !

Back on topic, never used the fingerprint recognition on my phones for this possible failure taking place, simple coding should suffice in most cases, as if the phone gets lifted, I would expect it would be re-worked by some thief or his agent in order to open the thing back up- even if its simply for parts !

Fingerprint sensor needs to be clean and your finger/thumb dry. It allows a fair bit of leeway because if you think when you set it up you’d to put your finger on it several times until it built up a wide print. Any issue with mine I wipe the sensor or my thumb then it works perfectly again. Never heard of one failing yet. By the way I set mine to the seven digit lock which makes the phone nigh on impenetrable

I don’t think it’s down to washing your hands, I have to wash mine at least 30 times during my day at work and mine is working fine.

(It even works when you are wearing latex gloves?!?)

Went to get some diesel today. Like a lot of machines you enter your code by touching the screen. I tried with gloves on but nothing happened. Would only accept a fingertip.--

I keep anti-germ wipes in the car and immediately used one.

Next time I'll try something metallic in my hand to see if it works that way. In the sunlight I could see the touch screen was covered in finger prints.----

Old fashioned pencil with a rubber on the end works for me
