Small but interesting EGR fact
When the engine coolant is below a certain temperature, the ECU activates the EGR to speed engine warm up.
Thought that was a nice little fact when I read it. I wonder how much difference it actually makes! |

The only thing that made me do it was seeing the state of the manifold and EGR itself. If they didnt build up all that **** I would have left it on, as I like the concept of what the EGR actually does... I wonder if there is such a thing as an EGR that doesnt produce the gunk? |

Most Egr systems cycle once on start up,with the newer cars which are quieter you can hear the change in engine tone as this happens. The egr's recirculating from cold over a controlled period of time to aid the engines warm up is quite new technology and more so Euro 5 and leading to 6 in conjunction with multiple injection cycles.

Mines still there, reducing NOX and aiding cylinder cooling

It helps cylider cooling when used normally. It opens generally with a duty cycle and is opened a pre set amount for a short time but very rarely held fully open. When used for quick warm up it is opened fully but is ported to the head differently to what normal egr is. Newer technology, so far only heard it to be used by Fiat so far

I find it a bit odd that the air comes in the air intake, gets compressed by the turbo, then goes through the intercooler to be cooled down (as the turbo will have heated it up). But then the EGR valve adds hot emissions to the mix before it gets to the cylinders! Surely warming up the air going into the engine right after you've just had it cooled down is highly inefficient...
