Air Travel
Drove past what used to be RAF Kemble in Gloucestershire near Cirencester- I would estimate there were 200 plus airliners parked, 747's etc. all the main airlines and many minor of those Ive never heard of- lots of photographs etc being taken. Chris.S.

Kemble
Interesting. We used to go to the cafe on the airfield there for MG-R meets. I may pop up and have a look - can you get on the airfield and is the cafe open atm?

If I remember correctly they dismantle aircraft for parts at Kemble.I wouldn't have thought there would be huge demand right now.Have been to many great airshows there.

We drove pass there a couple of weeks ago and as you say I was surprised at how many aircraft were parked up.
You only have to look at flight tracker and the like to see how few aircraft are in the air compared with the normal 20k ( before Covid) at any one time. As of now there are less than 9500 in the air, if you say a 10% to 15% of all aircraft are cargo you can see why the air lines are starting to scrap aircraft. My guess it will be a few years ( yes years) before we see the amount of aircraft that was considered normal are back in the air. Part of me hopes we never see that volume again for the sake of the environment if nothing else, in my view flying to a destination for a few days away is ridiculous. Yes I get it that a £29 flight is a bargain but at what cost to the environment? |

I've gone over the figures on another thread; there were over 17,000 aircraft parked up worldwide. Air traffic movement was down to about 3% of normal, with 92% of that being freight.
Estimated that now up to 22% normal but it will never, never get back to previous levels. This will be affected by the number of companies and groups that have been forced into, and realizing that they can carry on business electronically. Add to that, the numbers of people who will now not aim to go on to an airliner again, and those, which number in millions worldwide, who will not be able to afford to do that for many years. Local resorts worldwide will see more local people visiting due to at least a whole generation who have known nothing but "going abroad for a holiday" finding what their own Country has to offer. |

In the press it has been reported that BA have parked up their 747's and do not expect to fly them again.
If a vaccine is found I think the rise in air travel will be swift to and from other countries that vaccinate their people. We then move to what happens if people are not vaccinated? macafee2 |

I read the powers that be in the EU are on the cusp of implementing a "Green tax" on aviation fuel the same as they're doing with shipping & road transport
Under the ESD (effort sharing decision) aligned to the Paris agreement it would effect the UK. Road transport is being included for the first time ever too wherein oil companies would have to purchase pollution permits on the ETS (emission trading system) to continue selling petrol & diesel to the motorist Freight transport is not included. I think the cheap air fares will not be back any time soon.

The virus is and will always be remembered as a terrible thing but in truth it will open a lot of peoples eyes to how we have been living and what we have been doing to this planet. We are going to have a long weekend in Devon in a few weeks time, no passport, no exchanging currencies and loosing and best of all we can leave after breakfast and be there mid pm with a relaxing stop for lunch, the last year when we went abroad we left here at 5am, spent £65 parking the car for a week, got there at 6pm. |
