Default Diesel thermostat related question

Yeah I know, yadayadayada lol

I'm going to get one of those 'mk3' replacements for my ZT in a few days, question is.... should I replace the water pump at the same time?
I've heard it has to be removed to get to the 'stat on a CDTi, so is it worth replacing at the same time or is ok to keep?

I know from experience that most VWs etc only get thiers changed regularly because they use plastic impellers that don't last.

Here's Matt's HOW-To on replacing the thermostat.

No need to remove the pump and you can get the proper 'stat from Matt too.

You can replace the thermostat with the water pump in place.

My water pump failed at just short of 300k miles, so they can last. The replacement, a Circoli from ECP, only lasted a further 60k miles, so you may be better off sticking with the original if your car isn't a high miler.

It is a bit more work to replace the water pump compared to just the thermostat, but if you are doing the water pump then well worth replacing the stat at the same time, and if you are doing either then replace the O ring for the small pipe going into the stat.

It's on 130k at the moment.
I might well take a chance and keep it then.

I guess it's as likely the timing chain could fail at any point too

Used to hear that they are good for 250k and other such nonsense.

They were designed to last the lifetime of the engine, so yours should have plenty of life left in them, assuming regular oil changes.
