Default Exhaust decibels

Whilst I admit to having a Peco big bore silencer on my Ford Anglia rally car many years ago, the level of noise from some 'modified' cars nowadays is simply ridiculous. My next door neighbour (who thinks he's a mechanic - main tools a 5lb lump hammer and a battery powered rattle gun) and his mates have a number of Honda Civic Type Rs and they seem to have competed to fit the noisiest possible exhaust. One of their cars has been parked up on the road for a while, so I checked its legitimacy on the DVLA site. Lo and behold, its MOT has expired - but interestingly, one of the failures was:-
Exhaust noise is clearly in excess of that emitted by a similar vehicle fitted with a standard silencer in average condition (8.1.1 (a)) - and the fault was listed as Repair immediately (major defects): too.
Have I read somewhere that some ANPR or Speed Cameras have the ability to record a vehicle's noise level ?

It's the same in my neck o the woods too Rod, They know PC Plod isn't around any more & they've turned the local roads into race tracks, You can hear those dump valves & loud exhausts tearing around the streets into the early hours every night.

There's one particular corner they use for 'drifting' and the house there has a permanently wrecked fence.

Some apparently can check the drive by Db on a vehicle, but they are rare.
Get pulled over by a traffic cop or traffic enforcement officer and a hand held Db meter comes out!
A friend of mine got pulled last year with his classic Mini.
Trying to argue that "open pipes" save lives because people distracted crossing the road while using mobile phones as an excuse didn't go down too well!
No sense of humour some people!

This is what Google says:-

The legal noise level is 82 decibels. A busy high street will produce a background noise level of around 80 decibels. But the loudest exhaust measured so far by one Welsh police force registered 107 decibels – the same as a pneumatic road drill, chainsaw or an aircraft taking off from 300 metres away.

I try to do a few track days a year, and they have very strict noise limits, although higher than the legal road limit they range from 97 to 103 drive by (so there's a monitoring system maybe 20m from the track in places) and the noise of some of the cars is crazy given how infrequently the limit is exceeded. So 107 decibels is quite impressive! Thing is there's sensible and idiotic...
