The Golden era of car ownership?

BBC news reports that plans are being made to reduce the need to own a car. Nothing new about congestion but rather than try to reduce traffic in towns and cities by several measures, Ditching the car is the new sound bite.

Are we therefore seeing the end of a golden age of ownership?

Is this the beginning of the end?

20 years from now will we actually have a credible alternative to the car or at least cleaner cars?

Cleaner cars is the current plan but now reduction too!!!

It’s a massive statement to make. Thousands of jobs involved with the car industry and some countries it is their only major export.

I’m sure there will be opinions and discussions.

The golden age of car ownership? Generally speaking is when the person being asked was young.

Dead right. Spent more on WD40 and car filler than petrol!

That all sounds perfectly fine to me, and I bet it could be repaired with four spanners sizes and a screwdriver

Now this is a strange one, I found these things perversely endearing, and a credible alternative to city cars

I saw not a single Rover at all in four days, nope not one, evidence that they have all but died a death in European cities, however I did spot something much better

Now the last time I saw a Landcrab, was a couple of months back when I was returning to London from Reading, it cheered me up no end to see one in a sea of modern cars

My friend's dad had one of those 2200's. It may be an impression of the times but l couldn't believe how fast it was. For such a big old lump she really lifted her skirts.

I quite fancy a landcrab now, the 3 litre is a big old desirable beast.

Some of them are emigrating!
My ZT190 came from the Netherlands as did two local Rover 75s and two MGFs.
They will be well taken care of here.

I'm afraid the truth is that in the city, even though I love my cars (6 of them at last count!) they're artifacts of the past and rapidly looking old fashioned and are, unfortunately, very much part of the problem, not the solution.

The golden age of car ownership is, I think, probably tied in with the colden age of consumption, which is sometime in the late 1950's into the 1960's. As soon as environmental matters such as recycling, air pollution and global warming etc., became economic factors compromises started having to be made which killed it off.

Oh, to be able to run today's econimical, reliable, comfortable and safe vehicles with those values, in a zero-consequenses environment!
