Default Rover 75 Fan problem

Hi

I'm hoping for advice with fan problem.
I've got a W Reg Rover Club SE 2.0 Ltr V6.
Love driving it.

The other day it developed a problem.
The radiator overheated. It happened when I was stuck in traffic or stopped at traffic lights.
When driving normally it seemed ok. I'm presuming this is because airflow through the front grill was keeping the radiator cooler (at 9o'clock on temperature gauge).
As soon as I hit traffic, drove slow or stopped it went 12 0'clock. I had to pull over to find water coming out of the radiator filler cap.
When it had cooled I topped it back up.

I believe the reason for this problem is because the fan is not working. It's not coming on, hence why the radiator overheats at slow/no speeds. But why is the fan not coming on? I've heard it might be the resistor... Could it be this or something else?

I'd appreciate some advice on diagnosing the problem and fixing it so I can get back to driving on the road with my car again. Apologies if this has been asked elsewhere. I looked through the forums but couldn't find anything that a layman like myself would understand as being applicable to my particular problem.

Thanks, Pieter.

Correct Pieter; that is by far the most likely reason.

That depends upon whether you have a 2 speed or 3 speed fan system. Your car may have the latter. When you peer in through the radiator grille, can you see the silver resistor mounted at the two o'clock position on the fan shrouding?
